This Fortune 5 Automobile manufacturer, one of the world's largest industrial organizations, has a corporate presence in over 190 countries. Besides vehicles, this automaker has substantial interests in telecommunications and space, aerospace and defense, consumer and automotive electronics, financial and insurance services, locomotives, automotive systems and heavy duty automatic transmissions. This Top 5 automaker, partnering with technology company EDS, was in the midst of a server migration from Lotus Domino™ 4.1x to 4.6x. Affecting over 100,000 individuals, the migration needed to take all desktop icons on the Notes client workspace, as many as 250 per person in some cases, and then point them from the current server to a new server. Without a migration tool, each of these icons would have to be individually moved, thereby wasting many hours of productive work per employee. Binary Tree, a Lotus Premium Business Partner and a leader in custom-built software solutions, developed a unique utility to take the automaker's desktops from one Domino server to the next. The tool addressed the three problems that were presented to BinaryTree: Migration of all desktop icons to the new server Modifying the local name and address book "location" documents and adding/removing connection documents Modifying any values in the user's "notes.ini" file The administrator's e-mail can enable all the functions of the tool or can just address them one at a time. It also allows the administrator to optimize the characteristics of the Notes client on the user's desktop. The solution is deployed to the individual user via e-mail. Immediately upon opening the specific message, the tool will take care of migrating all information from the initial desktop to the new desktop without the loss of data and, more importantly, time. Keeping ahead of the competition in today's world means staying on the technological edge, which requires constant upgrades to existing software.
