“Binary Tree was the smart choice for SNC. With their assistance and a bit of advanced planning, the project went smoothly with virtually no user downtime experienced.” Brett Nashlund, IS Manager, Sierra Nevada Corp.
| Customer's Background |
Founded in 1963, Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) is a progressive, rapidly growing defense electronics engineering and manufacturing enterprise offering state-of-the-art technology products to all military services and other government agencies.
With the recent acquisition of several smaller companies, SNC deployed a Lotus Notes and Domino infrastructure supporting 450 users in 15 separate locations. Due to complications of managing multiple address books and security concerns, SNC decided to integrate the entire company into one single Lotus Notes Domain and address book. Also, as part of modifying the existing infrastructure, the need arose to change Lotus Notes users’ hierarchical naming, to move Lotus Notes users to new Domino Servers, and to update their desktop information to reflect the move. Such Lotus Notes and Domino infrastructure modifications require very careful planning and a great deal of time and administrative effort.
SNC selected Binary Tree to assist with the project. SNC has used Binary Tree’s migration tools in the past with great success. Furthermore, manager Brett Nashlund found that other companies’ tools “were not as robust, more expensive, and lacked the available onsite personnel to assist with the migration.” Binary Tree was the smart choice for SNC. |
| Binary Tree Solution |
To facilitate the infrastructure migration process and reduce time and effort associated with this project, Binary Tree proposed using Binary Tree’s CMT for Notes Domains, Server, Users and Desktops (CMT for Domains). CMT for Domains has been designed and used by other clients in similar projects and has dramatically reduced the time and effort associated with such projects.
In order to properly deploy CMT for Domains at Sierra Nevada, Binary Tree conducted onsite deployment and pilot migration assistance by a Binary Tree consultant, which includes environment analysis, a migration pilot for a small group of pilot users and documentation of the migration project activities. Binary Tree consultants possess a great deal of experience in the area of Domain migration and consolidation and are able to provide consulting assistance in finalizing this approach.
Nashlund noted, “The staff at Binary Tree was extremely helpful. Our migration costs included an onsite engineer that was very familiar with the software and able to assist when we had questions. With their assistance and a bit of advanced planning, the project went smoothly with virtually no user downtime experienced.”
The project was completed well within the 6 month deadline. SNC managers said they would recommend CMT for Domains to other corporations that needed similar assistance. The audit feature in particular helped in identifying potential problems in advance, and the step-by-step procedures allowed for timeline management and reporting of daily activity. But in the end, “it was the assistance of Binary Tree onsite staff that truly made the project a success.” |
